I LOOKED OUT MY BEDROOM WINDOW....

and this is what I saw...

...Those six babies just clung to their mothers back.

AND LOOK WHO JUST SHOWED UP...PAPA!
so it appears that they live in a little family unit, with
the male sticking around or then again it could be
another female...I am not an oppossum expert..
nor do I claim to be one..

I went outside to see where they went...It had been awhile since I
saw them.   And there they were...the whole little family, totally unafraid
of me ...showing no fear, bearing no teeth...and those tiny babies still
hanging on for dear life.. Creepy yet cute.   We get alot of wildlife
in our garden...amazing really for being in the middle of a major
city... I have seen many oppossums, raccoons, hawks...one morning
I opened the front curtains and there was a coyote in the front garden.
Mind you, we are not in the hills or canyons...We live surrounded
by two major freeways...

Hey just a little change of pace from all the usual beautiful fashion layouts,
art projects, delicious pictures of food, fabulous recipes you see in alot
of blogs... Yes, life in the big city here in southern California!!

PS....We had the most killer rainstorm last night.  This is very late in "the season" for us...It is
so wonderful to get the rain as our water tables are dangerously low....too many folks, too little
water.   So when we get rain it is reason for celebration...unless of course you live in the  hillsides
and burn areas...Oh California...what a complicated place you are...  I always tell people
we pay dearly for this wonderful weather .

Good morning Cynthia! Well isn't thaat something...I've never seen a momma possum carrying her babies in real life before. You had the whole family visiting you! I think there was one in our lilac grove out back early the other morning..Shep was snarling and jumping around and I could see eyes in the bushes with the flashlight. Yuck. At least I never found a body so it must have gotten away. I'm off to yoga this morning so I better get in the shower. Have a wonderful day! MauraXX

Great photos!

I hope to meet you at Elkhorn this year. (I grew up in Northern Calif. so it seems we swapped states!)

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photos with us! We have possums in WLA too - I'm by two freeways and the SM Airport.
I grew up in the canyons (seeing deer families and coyotes) but never saw possums there and here I am in the "flat", surrounded by constant traffic and here they are.
Isn't this April rain odd?! And following on the heels of a Santa Ana. But oh so welcome! I can't remember April rain??? Surely there must have been some before but I don't recall it.
Happy week to you!
Sally

I haven't seen the whole family though.

i have a possum guy that comes into my mudroom all the time, and a skunk and raccoon. none of them bother me, they just look at me when i go out.

Great photos Cynthia! We moved from Chico & lived with wildlife up there. Even had raccoons living in attic one spring. They sure can make a noise! We did not have the heart to kick the family out, so hubby left food for them on porch so mom would not have to leave babies for long. I am glad to meet another wildlife lover! Inge

Amazing these guys are not trying to bite you. They are vicious little critters, so be careful. That would be a nasty bite. My Yorkie tried to take one on one evening, not good. But they are adorable on the back of mama. Amazing in Santa Monica. Big hug, Riki

it's nice that all of you live in harmony. possums are good little creatures despite the icky teeth. ;-)
